Vampire AU someone stop me who am I kidding I can't stop
Vampires are usually seen as monstrous soulless creatures with no conscience. Dangerous creatures that need to be destroyed.
True, they feed off the blood of humans. But few do so maliciously. Humans are their food the same as mice are food to a cat. But they don't hate them or cause unnecessary harm to them (unlike cats). Sadistic vampires were usually sadistic to all creatures, and eventually came to justice from their own clans, without the need of being hunted down by humans.
Until one such Dreamer clan vampire was caught one night, and while he was locked up to wait for the sun to rise, he spoke to the hunter guarding his cell. He knew of this human and his story. He was the greatest vampire hunter ever seen. Many had fallen to his blade. So much so, that some had taken it upon themselves to get back at the man by attacking his family. But though his wife was confirmed dead, his daughter was not found. The Dreamer clan vampire used this against him, telling him that he knew of his daughter, and would help him find her if he would only let him out.
The hunter was so desperate to find his daughter safe, that he did as asked, and the moment the door opened, the vampire attacked him. But he didn't kill him. He believed the best punishment for a Hunter such as this, was to become that which he loathed more than anything. He turned the hunter, not knowing that he would become the Nightmare King that would eventually practically wipe his clan from existence.
Every vampire clan has a talent. Whether born or turned, they all have the potential to gain some supernatural ability. Though the Dreamer clan's ability to manipulate dreams, was only inherited through birth. A vampire that had been turned by a Dreamer clan would not gain that ability.
Pitchiner Cosmosis, the hunter that had been turned that fateful night, gained a power never seen before. Power over shadows and darkness, and the ability to manipulate the darkness in others. He hunted down almost every Dreamer clan vampire there was and drained them dry, before inserting his own darkness into them before they died, and changing them into something else entirely. An army of nightmare men.
Only all the clans uniting to fight Pitch could drive him back, and he was eventually banished into a dark prison beneath the Earth's surface.
The oldest and wisest of the Dreamer clan, and now the last, was distraught that his clan had been destroyed. He could not try to rebuild it though. Perhaps it was time for the Dreamer clan to become simply that. A Dream. He decided he would sleep, and not wake again, until a time came that the other clans had need of him.
Before entering his hibernation though, he had a special dream. A dream of the future that he told the other clan leaders before falling asleep. He said that one day a mortal born Queen would rise, with snow in her veins and ice in her heart, and she could unite the clans and lead them to a new golden age. But if she refused to take her place with the clans, Pitch would take her, and make her his Queen. Together with his power over Darkness and her power over Ice, they would create a new age of eternal night that no one could escape.
The Dreamer clan: Could enter and manipulate dreams. They generally used this to keep their food source asleep and calm as they fed, so they would not wake or suffer. This meant they would not need to drain them too much, and could leave them alive. Some though, would use it in more sinister ways. Sandy, the last Dreamer, was a pacifist though, and only uses his powers for good.
The Shifter clan: Shapeshifters. Each shifter can transform into one animal. This is where the myth of Werewolves came from. Someone saw a shifter change into a wolf. A completely understandable mistake. The leader of the Shifter clan is E.Aster Bunnymund. Many find the fact that his animal form is a bunny amusing...Until he half shifts and threatens to remove their head from their shoulders.
The Wonder clan: These are the vampires who's abilities have strayed from the original clan abilities. A vampire bitten or born that can do things no other vampire has. Had Pitch not become so twisted and evil, he would have been welcome in this family. The leader of the Wonder clan is North. His talent is animation. He can bring to life inanimate objects to do his bidding. He likes to joke that he simply breathes a little wonder into them, and their curiosity about life does the rest.
The Flight clan: These vampires had the ability to grow wings, and communicate with winged creatures. The leader of the Flight clan is Toothiana. Her clan also suffered heavy losses over the years due to hunters, until only Tooth was left. She went into hiding up in the mountains and rarely ventures into human territory anymore, letting her army of vampire bats collect blood for her.
Years and years after the Nightmare war, a young (300 year old) vampire named Jack Frost is out hunting. He's found a young woman walking home and decided to stalk her. He doesn't particularly like hurting people, but the hunt can be fun. He generally tries to make the kill itself as quick as possible, so his prey won't suffer.
Which is why he's drawing out the hunt this time. There's something about the girl he's following that he likes. In fact several times he considers leaving her to hunt someone else, if he weren't so drawn to following her. Eventually, he decides to just bite the bullet and speak to her instead.
Nearly scaring her half to death after jumping out of the tree she'd been walking under, though, isn't the best first impression to make, especially when she'd already been on edge. She doesn't take kindly to his attempts to get to know her and tries to make him leave her alone. Eventually Jack loses his patience and grabs her to bite her. Something keeps him from killing her though. Just before he bites into her neck, he decides on a whim to change her instead of drinking from her.
The shock of the curse/infection entering her body knocks her out, and he brings her back to the Wonder clan's residence. Though North scolds him for trying to turn someone without consent.
This is where the majority of vampires differ from human's ideas of them. A vampire will usually only turn someone if they'd learnt of their existence, and wanted to become one. Forcing immortality on someone, can just lead to another situation like with Pitch. Luckily it takes two bites to turn someone. North ordered Jack from the room, and waited for Elsa to wake up, so he could try to explain.
It wasn't a fun conversation. She was understandably upset about the whole thing. But North's promise that she could still go back to her normal life, and that they wouldn't bother her again helped calm her down. He warned her not to tell anyone about them, and gave her advice on assisting the "infection" out of her system. Spending as much time in the sunlight as she can, despite how her body won't want to. Avoiding meaty foods and eating vegetables and fruit instead, and drinking plenty of water. Sleeping earlier in the night, and waking up earlier to maximize how much sun exposure she gets and keeping her body's sleep clock tuned in to a diurnal sleeping pattern instead of a nocturnal one.
Elsa agreed to all of these and let North take her home. She may not have trusted him completely, but he was giving her an out, so she at least trusted him more than the vampire who had attacked her.
The same vampire that followed them to Elsa's place so that he could apologize to her. After all of that, he was still curious about her.
While peeking through her window later though, watching her brush her hair in the mirror, Elsa stopped, clearly thinking about what had happened. She looked at the already healed bite on her neck, looking like nothing more than a pair of mosquito bites, and touched the mirror where the bite reflected....Only to jump back in shock when the mirror iced over.
Watching from the window, Jack also scrambled back onto the roof. Now he knew why he was so drawn to her. Why North had felt the same need to keep her happy rather than taking the easier or safer way out of the complicated situation. Why Jack had to be extremely careful in how he handled things, and had better consult North before doing anything.
Because if he gave her that second bite without her permission, he would likely send the Ice Queen straight to Pitch, out of her anger towards them. And if he did nothing, Pitch would just find her.
